Deep Time
I had some trouble coming up with a time where i was reading and experienced "deep time", but i do think i have come up with an activity that has allowed me to have the experience. When i was in high school i played basketball, and i sucked at free throws. i would go out to the basketball hoop outside my house and would practice my free trow shooting for hours, and in those hours that i spent shooting and practicing my free throw shooting skills i do believe i experienced what Birkerts would consider "deep time". I think that my free throw shooting fits into Birkerts definition of "deep time" because it fits into each of the categories; depth, wisdom, and resonance. The depth categories talks about meaning and significance. Getting better at the skill of free throw shooting did have meaning to me and was quite significant to how i would preform during that weeks game. Wisdom talks about human nature and not just relying on facts. In that time i was practicing i realized that i could not rely on the facts that if i line up the exact same way every time i took a shot i would make it. I had to understand that human nature is going to make me mess up if i don't take it under consideration while i am shooting. Finally resonance. This piece talks about silence. During my time outside with me and the basketball I would be silent. It helped me to concentrate on what my task at had was. So I believe that my "deep time" was found more when i was shooting free throws outside of my house, rather then when i was reading a book.
