Smoking is a family thing?

John "jackie" Farleyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqdTBDkUEEQ

The propoganda video that i have chosen from youtube is a Winston's cigarette ad by the Flinstones. It stood out to me because I used to watch the tv show the Flinstones when i was younger. The video is centered around the central idea that two people are bored. In the case of this video the two people bored are Barney Rubble and Fred Flinstone. The ad is giving the idea of smoking to pass time or to combat boredom is the thing to do. The show also talks the Winstons Cigarette company up by saying that "winston tastes good like a cigarette should."
The ad does a good job by taking the everyday family portrayed in the video and making them into smokers. The use of boredom is a good reason for people to take up smoking as a past-time and is a good ploy to get young kids to start smoking Winston's cigarettes. By making the Flinstones family smokers it gives people the idea that it is socially acceptable and fun to smoke cigarettes. Since the video is about the Flinstones, the cigarette company was targetting the younger kids and showing them that it could be normal for a family to smoke Winston's Cigarettes together.
The cultural myth is basically the idea that average american families just like yours can smoke and should smoke. The use of the mom figure, Fred's wife, makes cigarettes seem comforting since mothers are supposed to comfort their kids. In turn the idea that cigarettes being smoked by a mom makes them seem like they should be smoked as a comfortable vice instead of just a past-time. Starting by saying cigarettes should be smoked out of boredom then moving onto saying that they are a nurturing cultural thing to do makes it a better ad and more likely that kids will want to try Winston Cigarettes.

  1. Pebbles and bam bam do not have anything to do with this commercial. For anyone who doesn't know who they are, pebbles and bam bam are the kids in the Flinstones. The commercial left them out in our opinion, because this ad is trying to get kids to start smoking without including them in the commercial. This Makes smoking seem like a grown-up thing.
A general cultural assumption could be that smoking is a good past time.
