Reading Responce - The Owl Has Flown, by Sven Birkerts
In his essay The Owl Has Flown, Sven Birkerts maintains that "We can resist the skimming tendency and delve; we can restore, if only for a time, the vanishing assumption of coherence." (page 34). In other words, Birkerts believes that as readers we need to slow down, focus and dive into the text we are reading, thus resulting in a greater understanding of what we read. More than ever our generation is bombarded with text, over time, skimming as become a method to deal with the bombardment, however when we skim we loose the coherence of the text, we are not taking the time to take it all in, as Birkerts would state we must "delve".
Birkerts focus that we are loosing the coherence of reading is a direct result of technology, multiplied by our current education structure of being assigned multiple chapters in multiple classes. Often skimming the text is the only means of grasping a small aspect of what we read, but enough to get us a grade. In general, I would love to slow down, delve, and walk away with a better coherent understand of the text I read, alas I have to manage my time and there simple isn’t enough hours in a day.
