Reading Response 2

Reading Response 2

by Rodney DeJager

This is a super-bowl commercial for Doritos chips. In this commercial a middle-aged male office employee has a “magic crystal ball” which is really a snow globe, and he uses it to make a wish for free Doritos at the office today. He does this by making his wish for free Doritos while shaking the crystal ball. He then throws the crystal ball at a Doritos vending machine. The glass on the machine breaks and he in addition to several other employees walk up to the machine and start grabbing Doritos. One of his co-workers then picks up the crystal ball and shakes it while wishing for a big promotion. He then throws the crystal ball and hits his boss with it. The first employee then walks up and says “Promotion? Not in your future.”

This commercial does not and is not intended to cause the viewer to want to buy the chip because of the taste. Texture, or quality of the product. This commercial connects to the viewer in psychological ways. It connects Doritos to happiness by showing that when you make a wish for Doritos it comes true while making a wish for something else will put you in a worse place then you were before. So hinting that Doritos will help to make your life better. This makes a great appeal to almost everyone. Therefore this commercial does not necessarily sell Doritos but the idea that happiness can be gained from buying Doritos. This commercial also appeals to the viewers through humor. A funny commercial like this often lingers in someone's mind and is also easily remembered. Whenever the viewer thinks of this commercial, Doritos also jump into the forefront of the viewer's mind. This is why this commercial makes such a great impression and appeal.
