Pepsi Commercial

In a Pepsi commerical the director uses a little American girl and her grandfather. The scene is shot at an Italian restaurant where the grandfather and little girl walk in and are seated at the bar. The big Italian man at the counter asks the little girl what she wants, of course she replies with a Pepsi. The counter man doesn't tell her they only have coke instead he justs fills her cup up with coke. He turns away after handing her the drink. In a masculine Italian voice the little girl calls the man back over. She continues speaking like a man to him, explaining that she is no dumbo and is very insulted by his actions of bringing her a coke. As she is speaking the entire mood of the restaurant has changed and all eyes are on the little girl. The audio really ties together the seriousness of her masculine voice. In the background are big Italian men who look like casino bad guys from action movies like Rush Hour. At the end of the commercial she makes him get her a Pepsi and the counter man gets it for her. As she takes a sip of the Pepsi, a cook at the restaurant pops a bubble with gum, as the bubble pops as she sips a loud explosion scares everyone in the restaurant except the little girl.

This commercial brings us a lot of interest because it gives you the effect that a small innocent little girl is bossing around the big Italian man with her fake voice, which is funny to most Americans. The voice of a typical Italian man, all to get a Pepsi Cola. The little girl her has gotten her wish for Pepsi telling us that if we act tough we could just get anything we wanted. The director was really just trying to reach out to us through comedy.

The commerical works on me because I am suckered into the cute innocent girl and the comedy being the fact that her voice changes into a big masculine Italian man voice. Also the fact that the whole restaurant is interested in what she says and terrified at the end of the cute little girl.

  1. 8. What general cultural assumptions, meanings or myths are identifiable in the text?

The "angry" italian is a cultural assumption when you think about Italians. Since this commercial takes place in an Italian resteraunt, you would expect to see Italians inside. Where the humor comes from in this video text is that you don't expect the "angry" Italian assumption to be coming from a young girl.
