Ideoloical Criticism

The add I chose is a commercial of the new 5th generation mercades benz. It starts out going through the generations giving the idea that the mercades is timeless. In the commercial the mercades is always being driven by an attractive women and as she drives through the streets everyone stops to look at her and the car; giving the impression that driving this car is something that everyone wants and is a high item product. The people on the side of the road are hippie's, rich people, and even rockers, showing that this car is looked apon by everyone, not just one type of person or group. The women driving the car are dressed in high price close showing that her car is also expensive and is a luxuri to drive. Hense, why everyone stops and stares as she drives by. At the end of the commercial words appear that say "Timeless, unlike any other"

The cultural narrative/myth is that you don't have to be attractive to drive this car. America is based on looks and money. The car is timeless and no matter what age we are in the car will always hold the same status and reputation. If you drive a mercedes everyone will stop and stare at you, you get attention and you gain the reputation that comes with owning this car. The commercial also shows the car only in the city and around beautiful poeple. The myth is that if you drive this car you are somehow "in" and everyone wants to be you. The car doesnt make you good looking and you dont have to be good looking to drive it.

Car commercials as well as others always have attractive people in them. We are attracted to this commercial because we have been brought up expecting commercials to have attractive people in them helping to sell the product. If there was an ugly fat man driving the mercedes the commercial would have a different effect on us. People wouldnt enjoy watching the commercial and since we are used to good looking people, if an ugly fat man were to drive the car in the add, we would most likely pay more attention to him then the car. The myth is that we will want a mercedes because the commercial tricked us into looking at it by adding good looking women in the commercial.

10: How does the audio or musical component of the text influence your reading?

The music was a classic song that talked about timelessness; which is also the mercades logo. Your not only reading that the mercades is timeless but also listening to it.
